The Vanity Vitamin: Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known for boosting the immune system but thanks to studies and research we now know that regular intake of this vitamin carries so many more benefits.. Consuming the recommended daily dose of vitamin C can help benefit your mind, body, and skin. Vitamin C aids in the growth and development of body tissues, heals wounds, and helps maintains cartilage in your teeth and bones. The vitamin also aids in the production of collagen which is referred to as, “the glue that holds everything together”.

Mind

Evidence has shown that consuming plenty of fruit and vegetables is associated with enhanced mood and psychological well-being. Fruit and vegetables are rich in micronutrients which are known to be the building blocks of the brain and body. Your brain consumes more vitamin C than other parts of your body and long after the rest of the body has depleted vitamin C, the brain maintains its levels. That’s partly because glucose is broken down and transformed into energy which helps to power all your thoughts, feelings, and movements.

Body

Your body doesn’t produce vitamin C on its own, so eating foods rich in vitamin C or taking a scientifically acclaimed supplement is in your best interest. Also consuming foods rich in iron will help to boost your body’s ability to absorb and use vitamin C. Since vitamin C is a component of collagen it acts as a strengthening agent for your teeth, bones, muscles, and blood vessels.

Beauty

Because vitamin C supports the body in producing collagen it also helps protect your skin by clearing out environmental toxins and other pathogens. The body naturally slows down the production of collagen as you grow older and without adequate amounts of vitamin C, the body cannot efficiently form or store collagen. Vitamin C is known as a “vanity vitamin” because it promotes healthy nails, hair, skin, and other benefits. It is known for naturally improving the overall appearance of skin by fighting signs of aging, UV exposure, hyperpigmentation, and dark patches. The best part is you can use vitamin C internally and topically which will create a brightening and “glowy” effect on the skin.
